Visiting Carcassonne? What you need to know

The city of Carcassonne, one of the most beautiful fortresses in Europe and certainly one of the best preserved, is surrounded by majestic walls marked by defensive towers.

A flagship from the Middle Ages and attracts millions of visitors every year, all captivated by the unique atmosphere that emanates from these ancient stones. Famous visitors included Walt Disney, Grace Kelly (the future Princess of Monaco) and Winston Churchill.

Did you know: During a stay in Carcassonne in the 1930s, Winston Churchill especially painted pictures of the city wall.

Did you know: Walt Disney was so captivated by the city that it inspired the design for the Sleeping Beauty Castle.

The site has also inspired Hollywood director Kevin Reynolds, who shot scenes on the spot there for the 1990 film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” starring Kevin Costner.

This large site is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
