The Canadian government announced today, Monday, July 19, 2021, that Canada will allow fully vaccinated Americans to enter the country from August 9th. In addition, border restrictions will be eased for other foreign nationals from 7 September.

The press release states that: “On September 7, 2021, provided the domestic epidemiological situation remains favorable, the Government intends to open the borders of Canada to all fully vaccinated travelers who have completed the entire vaccination process with a Government of Canada-accepted vaccine for at least 14 days. prior to arrival in Canada and who meet specific entry requirements.

As a first step, starting on August 9, 2021, Canada plans to begin allowing entry for U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are currently resident in the United States and who have been fully vaccinated at least 14 days before entering Canada. for non-essential travel. This initial step allows the Government of Canada to fully operationalize the adjusted border measures by September 7, 2021 and recognizes the many close ties between Canadians and Americans. ”

This announcement comes despite Prime Minister Trudeau’s recent statement that it would “take some time” before travelers would be allowed in the country. Canada’s borders have been closed to all non-essential travel since March 2020, when travel restrictions were introduced to stop the spread of COVID-19. It has now been 16 months since the border between Canada and the United States has been closed, and there has been increasing pressure from both US and Canadian citizens, business leaders and politicians to ease travel requirements for cross-border travel.

“The Government of Canada recognizes that people have been waiting to reopen the world’s border. We have been fully committed to our American counterparts given the deep economic and family ties between our two countries. Today’s announcement is another major step in our approach to relief. of border measures guided by facts, scientific evidence and advice from our public health experts, “said Bill Blair, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Planning.

Although fully vaccinated travelers are allowed to enter the country, they must follow strict requirements. With a few exceptions, travelers must use the ArriveCAN app to submit their travel information. Fully vaccinated travelers who meet specific criteria do not need quarantine upon arrival in Canada. In addition, “the requirement for a hotel stay of three nights for hotel stays is excluded for all travelers arriving by plane from kl. 12:01 EDT on August 9th. Fully vaccinated travelers who meet the requirements will be exempt from quarantine; however, all travelers must submit a quarantine plan and be prepared for quarantine if it is determined at the border that they do not meet the necessary requirements. Note that the vaccine must be from an approved source (you can see a list of approved vaccines here).

The press release notes that: “All travelers, regardless of vaccination status, will still require a COVID-19 molecular test result prior to entry. No matter how effective August 9, 2021, the Government of Canada adjusts its test strategy upon arrival for fully vaccinated travelers. Using a new surveillance program for border testing at airports and land border passengers, fully vaccinated travelers do not need a post-arrival test unless they are randomly selected to conduct a day 1 COVID-19 molecular test. There are no changes to the mandatory test requirements for unvaccinated travelers. ”

The Government of Canada still urges Canadians to avoid non-essential international travel. “While Canada continues to develop in the right direction, the epidemiological situation and vaccination coverage are not the same throughout the world. The Government of Canada continues to advise Canadians to avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada – International travel increases your risk of exposure to COVID-19 and its variants as well as spreading it to others. Border measures are also subject to change as the epidemiological situation develops. As Canada appears to welcome fully vaccinated travelers from the United States, the federal government will continue to monitor the situation and provide updated travel tips to Canadians. ”
